Foxes seem to be having it all their own way in Britain at the moment. Not only has hunting them been banned in the countryside, but foxes are even gaining ground in the cities. The urban fox has been slowly growing in numbers for the past fifty years and has now become a regular feature of our cityscape. In fact, you are probably more likely to see a fox's silky coat while driving late at night in London than during a pleasant country walk.

These new city neighbours of ours, however, are certainly not without their bad habits. Perhaps the most unsociable of all is the high-pitched cry they have developed so as to be heard above the city's noise. Like other animals, they also tend to mark out their territory with their scent, dig holes in people's gardens and commit numerous other petty crimes. A friend of mine once came home at night to find his living room window broken and a guilty fox curled up in his favourite chair!
