Today, there are about 7,000 different languages spoken around the world. 225 of these are native languages in Europe. Although a lot of languages have 50,000 words or more, a typical speaker of a language will only use a small fraction of this vocabulary. In fact, most people use the same few hundred words in everyday conversation. Languages can affect each other in different ways. For example, in the past, the English language borrowed many words from other languages. Nowadays, though, many European languages are borrowing words from English.
At least half of the people in the world today are bilingual, which means they speak two languages. There are several benefits to being bilingual. Firstly, it makes learning another language easier. Also, being bilingual improves your thinking process and encourages you to communicate with people and cultures foreign to your own.
Speaking two or more languages also increases your chances of getting a job. Finally, multilingual companies are known to generally do better in the business world than monolingual ones.
