Three teenagers were asked about paper recycling and how it can reduce global warming. Read their answers and decide if the statements are True, False, or Not stated.
Daniel
Occasionally, people look at recycling to decide if it helps or hurts the environment. Sometimes, I have doubts myself about the benefit of recycling paper. I don't think that there are a lot of secondary effects to worry about. It would not surprise me but that it took more energy to make paper from recycled materials than it does from trees. Cutting down trees, making paper from them, and then burying the paper seems like a fairly efficient means of sequestering carbon from the atmosphere. Maybe we can reduce buying glossy or matt magazines and will choose electronic ones.
Sarah
I'd like to add that paper recycling is a specific type of manufacturing: it produces extremely low-quality paper from paper of any quality. That means that when you need high or medium quality paper, you still have to cut down trees. If you need an illustrated fine book, you will have to buy it. It is really peculiar that we are trying to reduce using paper because I think that it's impossible to do in our society. Besides, like any kind of manufacturing, paper recycling takes some raw materials in (old paper is only one of them) and gives out some quantity of the desired output (recycled paper) and some garbage. As for me, I never throw away paper if I don't need it anymore. I can make different interesting things from it: confetti, toys for my family, or other little items. I think it's a small contribution, but it's worth it.
Sam
Paper recycling is a good idea and a good habit to get into. Manufacturing new paper out of recycled paper requires less energy than making paper out of wood. Production of 100 percent recycled paperboard uses 50 percent less energy compared to virgin grades of paperboard, thus significantly reducing the greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere. I would say you should not only recycle paper but also start growing trees and other plants and continue to conserve the beauty of flora and fauna around us. Controlling the tree and plant population is indeed a good thing. The more we have the better. It's vital to control how farmers grow and harvest crops, fruit, and vegetables. It can affect the environment dramatically.
