Gerund and Infinitive

  1. We use gerunds ( -ing form verb):
  • after certain verbs: I enjoy swimming.
  • after prepositions: I drank a cup of warm milk before sleeping.
  • as the subject or object of a sentence: Reading horrors is my favourite hobby.

We use gerunds (-ing form verbs) after these verbs: to enjoy, to fancy, to discuss, to dislike, to like, to love, to hate, don't mind, to finish, to suggest, to recommend, to keep, to avoid, etc.

  1. We use «to» + infinitive:
  • after certain verbs: We decided to buy this sofa.
  • after many adjectives: It's interesting to work with clay.
  • to show the reason for doing smth: He wants to go to England to study.

We use «to» + infinitive after these verbs: to agree, to ask, to decide, to plan, to hope, to promise, to want, etc.

  1. We use bare infinitive (without «to»):
  • after modal verbs: We must be there on time.
  • after help, let, make: He helped us organise your birthday party.
  • when we make an expression with why: Why call him back after all?
  • if we use verbs of perception, such as feel, sense, notice, hear, see: I noticed she looked at me.
