Annoying Habit
I have a naughty brother. And no, he is not 1 or 2 years old – he is 18.
When he was a child, he would never listen to our parents or to his teacher. My mum told him: 'Dan, you[can|can't|to can|to can't]break your toys! You have to keep them safe!' But Dan didn't listen and broke everything he had. Then it was summer and we went to the lake to swim. Our dad said to my brother: 'Dan, you[can't|to can't|to can|can]swim! Don't go too far!' But my brother answered: 'Yes, I[to can|can't to|can't|can]!' And he tried to go further in the water. Once he almost drowned! My dad saved his life but my parents were still shocked for a while.
The habit to do the opposite didn't go away as Dan was getting older. But all our family got used to it and made up our way of communicating with him. I'll explain. When I wanted him to do something, for example, to do the washing up, I didn't tell Dan it was his turn to wash the dishes. I asked Dan not to wash the dishes like this: 'Oh Dan, don't wash the dishes today! I want to do it myself. Mum will be so pleased with me!' And Dan replied he would never let mum be pleased with me and then he did the washing up himself.
But now my brother is 18 and he already has a car. But, as you understand, his nature stayed the same.
When a policeman stops him and warns: 'Hey sir! You[can't to|can|can't|can to]park your car here!', he sounds polite. But when my naughty brother answers: 'Of course, I[can't|to can|can|to can't]!', the policeman stops being polite and gives him a ticket. It is a pity that the police don't know our family's little secret.
