Jessica's Prom

My US cousin Jessica is in her 12th year at school, so last week she had a prom. A prom is a party for high school students which takes place at the end of a school year. It is a very important event for every teenager, as it signifies the end of their school days.

Jessica had been looking forward to her prom since the beginning of the school year. Needless to say, a great deal of preparation had been done. In Jessica's school, boys traditionally wear tuxedos or evening jackets for the prom and girls wear evening gowns. Naturally, there is always a certain rivalry among girls about their prom outfits, as every girl wants her evening gown to be the best. So you can imagine what a challenge it had been for Jess to choose the right prom outfit, hairstyle and make-up.

For those who do not have a boyfriend or a girlfriend, the time before the prom might be a period of stress. They might be horrified to think that, perhaps, no one will ask them to the prom and they will have to go to the prom alone which counts as a failure. Jess had been quite nervous about it too, as she had fallen out with her boyfriend a few weeks before the prom and they hadn't been speaking to each other for a long time. Luckily, they had finally made it up and went to the prom together.

At the prom, Jess looked like a fairy tale princess in her beautiful turquoise dress, which matched the blue of Jessica's eyes. She also had a small bouquet of tiny white roses around her wrist. Such bouquets are called corsages, and a lot of girls wear them for formal occasions. Boys can also wear flowers, but their bouquets are generally called buttonholes. In Jessica's prom photos, you could see some girls' corsages matching some boys' buttonholes, which indicated they were couples.

Jess's best friend Julia was announced the prom queen, so in the photos I could see Jess hugging Julia who was wearing a crown. They seemed very happy and careless, looking forward to the beginning of a new stage in their lives.
