Thanksgiving

is one of the most popular and oldest holidays in the US, celebrated on the

fourth Thursday of November. It originated as a harvest festival, and was

celebrated for the first time by the Pilgrims in 1621. That particular feast

lasted for three days, and was attended by Native Americans as well.

Although originally Irish, Saint Patrick's Day is

celebrated all over the world on March 17th. It has both a cultural and a

religious meaning, since it is named after Saint Patrick, the greatest patron

saint of Ireland who brought Christianity to the island, and it is also a celebration

of Irish culture and heritage.

One of the

most interesting holidays in Russia takes place at the end of February to

celebrate the end of winter. The holiday lasts for a week which is known as a

Shrovetide. In Russia this holiday is called “Maslenitsa”.

People traditionally eat lots of pancakes on this holiday and burn a huge hay

doll saying farewell to winter snow.
