During the 20th century large swathes were poisoned and the natural flow was destroyed. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this area is so extraordinary that many people regard it as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’. An entire mountainside collapsed in a nearby valley, hurling mud, stones, gravel, snow and ice. The authorities decided not to clear away the debris as it was a natural occurrence. This area is a strictly controlled nature reserve established to observe natural processes. It had become polluted with industrial waste and the fish were unable to breed. Programmes were established to make the water cleaner and safer, and to minimise the industrial pollution. Further action is being taken to limit the pollution deposited in the river by factories, and fines are being imposed on illegal fishing. This area was in danger from human neglect and natural erosion. In 1993, the Commission was created to save this area from total devastation. The younger generations are being taught how important this area is.
