The Himalayas are a towering mountain that is hard to reach. This name comes from ancient Indian Sanskrit, and means "the house of snow". The Himalayas serve as a kind of a natural border between Central and South Asia. The length of the mountain chain from west to east is a little bit less than three thousand kilometres, and the total area takes around six hundred fifty thousand square kilometres. The entire mountain range of the Himalayas consists of three steps. The first of them is the pre-Himalayas, which has a local name Sivalik hills. It is the lowest step of all. There are mountain summits no higher than two thousand metres. The second step is called the Lower Himalayan Range. The average height of the tops there is up to four kilometres. Then there are the highest mountains the Great Himalayas. The highest peak in the world, located between Nepal and China, is mount Chomolungma. However, it has several names and some variations in measuring its height. The names of this mountain peak in the local dialects have always been associated with the divinity of its origin: "Chomolungma" in Tibetan means "divine". For Europeans, local names were too complicated, and in 1856 the mountain was named Everest, in honour of the head of the British colonial geodetic survey, Sir George Everest.Nowadays, the official height of Everest is 8848 metres, taking into account the ice cap.
