Roger, how did you discover that humpback whalesactually sing to each other?

Well, I was in Bermuda when I happened to meetFrank Watlington, who had recorded some strangenoises on his underwater microphones.

Did you realise what he had recorded?

Not at first, but after I had studied the recordingscarefully, I realised that the noises were actually thewhales singing to each other.

And I understand that you released a recording ofthese haunting songs.

Yes, and it was very popular with the public. With the money that sales of the recording raised the‘Save the Whale’ movement was begun.

Which, I understand, helped to bring an end to commercial whaling?

Thankfully, yes. However, the whales are now under threat from pollution in the oceans.

Well, Roger, you’ll have to come back to talk about that on another show. Thank you for now.
