Relative clauses
Relative clauses — определительные придаточные предложения, которые начинаются с таких слов, как who, whose, which, that, where, when, why.

Who/whom (that) используется, когда речь идёт о людях.

Example: The man who lives next door is my teacher.

Mr Smith who(m) I saw on the street refused to talk to me.

Whose используется, когда речь идёт о людях, животных или предметах, чтобы выразить принадлежность.

Example: The woman whose house burnt down last week was upset.

Which (that) используется, когда речь идёт о вещах, предметах или животных.

Example: The skyscraper which(that) was known all over the world was 500 metres high.

Where используется по отношению к месту.

Example: It was the most beautiful place where I stayed.

When употребляется для выражения времени и используется со словами moment, day, year, autumn, time, period.

Example: It was the day when we met.

Why употребляется для выражения причины.

Example: I didn't know why they fired me.

Defining relative clauses — ограничительные определительные придаточные предложения, информация в которых является важной для значения главного предложения. Такие придаточные предложения используются со словами who, whose, where, when, why, which, that. В предложении они не выделяются запятыми.

Example: She was a distant relative who(m) she had never met before.

Non-defining relative clauses — неограничительные определительные придаточные предложения, информация в которых не является важной для значения главного предложения и может быть опущена. Такие придаточные предложения используются со словами who, whom, whose, where, when или which. В предложении они выделяются запятыми с обеих сторон.

Example: A distant relative, who(m) she had never seen before, arranged a meeting online.

   I didn't know. [Defining |Non-defining ].
8. He is the man [whose|which|what]
   wife won the lottery. [Defining |Non-defining ].
9. Do you remember the time [where|when|that]
   Mary met her boyfriend? [Defining |Non-defining ].
10. The ham and cheese sandwich, [what|which|whose]
    he ate immediately, was the most desirable snack for him after two days of hunger. [Defining |Non-defining ].
