When Basil Hallward finishes the picture of his friend Dorian Gray, the young man realises the first time that he will grow old and ugly. He a wish to stay young forever while the portrait grows old. Dorian also meets Basil’s friend Lord Henry, who teaches him that life is enjoyment and that the moral consequences of actions are not important. He falls in love with an actress, but rejects her when he sees her act badly. She kills herself and Dorian’s portrait changes. He realises his wish has come true and that he can behave as he wants, but will change. Dorian starts to behave differently, without thinking about other people. After causing the death of several more people, Dorian decides to destroy the painting as it is the only evidence against him. When he tries to stab it with a knife, he is the one to die, while the portrait returns to its original beauty.
