Most of the electric energy production process takes place in power plants. The first power plants were run on water power or coal. Today, coal, natural gas, wind energy are used to produce electricity. Oil can be used for this purpose but it is very expensive.

Atomic energy is energy carried by atoms. The term appeared in 1903 when Ernest Rutherford began to speak of the possibility to produce this kind of energy. Atomic energy is the source of nuclear power which is used to generate heat and electricity.
