It’s primarily about keeping an eye on what’s going on in the neighbourhood and watching out for you and your neighbours’ safety and property. But it also tries to improve the quality of life in the community and can involve other activities such as caring for elders and environmental work. Groups are organised by the people of the local community and each group decides on their own actions. However, they always work closely with the police, who provide advice and direct help when necessary. In some communities, people come together to prevent burglaries. With the help of a local blacksmith, they make all the homes in the neighbourhood more secure by installing better locks and alarm systems. In other neighbourhoods, people fight vandalism and other antisocial behaviour by providing young people with alternative activities. Since 1995, the Neighbourhood Watch Association has run the annual Neighbourhood Watch Awards.
