1. London is the capital of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, its political, cultural and business centre. The City of London is its central part, it is also the oldest part of London. Many people work in the City but very few live there. There are a lot of banks and offices in the City.

2. Two wonderful places of interest are situated in this part of London. They are the Tower of London and St. Paul’s Cathedral. The Tower of London, or the Tower, is an ancient castle on the north bank of the Thames. There are some buildings on its territory behind strong grey walls. The White Tower which gave the name to the place is a central building. The Tower of London was a palace, a fortress, a prison and the King’s Zoo. Now it is a museum. The Tower of London has some interesting traditions. One of them is to keep black ravens on its territory. They say Britain will be strong, powerful and successful if ravens don’t leave the Tower.

3. St. Paul’s Cathedral is one of the most famous and the most beautiful cathedrals in the country. It is a cathedral with a very large dome and the clock tower on the west end.

4. The geographical centre of London is Trafalgar Square with its fountains, a tall column, a monument to Admiral Nelson, and the National Gallery. The Gallery is world-famous and has the largest collection of paintings in the UK. Trafalgar Square is popular with tourists from different countries.
