A. The green belt was established to slow the rapid growth of London and was brought in by the Greater London Regional Planning Committee in 1935. Following this, the Town and Country Planning Act 1947 enabled local authorities to plan for green belt proposals of their own. There are now 14 green belts in the UK, covering roughly 13 per cent of total land.

B. Despite the obvious advantage of stopping urban sprawl, it has other benefits. Green belt protection has ensured people enjoy open land and countryside in and near the cities. Many areas of green belts are country parks or playing fields, they support sport and recreation, tourism and health — including reducing stress by providing peaceful and breathing spaces.

C. For all its benefits, the green belt is not entirely untouchable, and not only is it possible to build on this land, but the rate at which this is happening is increasing. The leading authority on green belt change is the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), and their research makes very interesting reading. Data collected annually by CPRE has shown that the green belt could actually be under threat if development continues to increase.
