Read the texts about three famous Russian monuments and answer the questions below.

The Victory Monument

141.8 metres tall

Moscow, Poklonnaya Hill

It is Russia's tallest monument. This triangular obelisk sculpted by Zurab Tsereteli symbolises Russian soldiers' defence of the homeland since 1898. At the height of 104 metres, there is a bronze statue of the Greek goddess Nike, the symbol of victory. The reliefs demonstrate key battles of the Great Patriotic War, like Stalingrad and Kursk. Golden letters spell out the names of heroic cities.

The monument's diameter is 37 times smaller than its height, making it surprisingly thin. The monument's stability in windy conditions is ensured by a special mechanism at its top that works like a seesaw to compensate the wind forces. The monument isn't always moveless, but it remains steady.

The Worker and Kolkhoz Woman Monument

58 metres tall

Moscow, VDNKh

The monument portrays a muscular worker and a fit kolkhoz woman holding a hammer and sickle. A Soviet sculptor, Vera Mukhina, designed this sculpture in 1937 for the World Exhibition in Paris.

At the Paris exhibition, the monument won the Grand Prix and impressed visitors with its scale and colour-changing properties: pink in the morning, silver by day, and golden in the sunset. This effect is caused by the material: aviation stainless steel that reflects light.

Today, these steel giants stand on a 35-metre pavilion where concerts and exhibitions are held.

The Motherland Calls Sculpture

87 metres tall

Volgograd, Mamayev Hill

The monument looks at the Volga River's right bank, where battles for Stalingrad took place. To reach the foot of the monument, visitors must climb 200 steps, symbolising the days of the Battle of Stalingrad.

The sculpture demonstrates a woman with a sword ready to fight. Sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich explained that she screams: "For the Motherland!"

In 1967, the Motherland Calls Sculpture entered the Guinness World Records as the tallest sculpture in the world. It held this title for over 20 years until Japan built the statue of the goddess Kannon. Today, the Volgograd sculpture is the 11th among the world's giant monuments.
