Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and doctor, born in May 1859 in Edinburgh. His mother liked to read and was good at telling stories. Arthur also discovered that he could tell interesting stories. He wrote science fiction, historical books, plays and poetry. He is famous for making the well-known detective, Sherlock Holmes.
Arthur was a smart child who wrote his first book at the age of six. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, where he started writing stories. His first book about Sherlock Holmes, "A Study in Scarlet," was published in 1887.
Sherlock Holmes was the creation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but many people of the time thought he was real because in the books he lived at a realistic address in London. He was a famous detective, a chemist, and a violin player. He was extremely clever and had superior mental powers.
