The Great Wall of China
One of the largest construction projects ever carried out, and probably the most famous symbol of China, is the Great Wall. Stretching across northern China from Liaoning Province in the east to Gansu Province in the west, it is 8,850 kilometres long. It is a wonderful structure made from earth, brick and stone which began its life over two millennia ago. Originally, the wall was not one, but many walls built by the different kingdoms that China was divided into. In 221 BC, Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China, united the kingdoms into one country. He ordered his general to knock down the walls that separated the kingdoms and join the remaining walls together to protect the country from invaders from the north. This was the start of the Great Wall of China as it is today, snaking through the countryside over valleys and mountain tops. Over the years, different emperors have added to the wall, extending it in some places and adding towers along the length of it. Most of what remains now was built during the Ming Dynasty of 1368–1644. Since then, large parts of the wall have fallen into ruin and some have disappeared completely. Despite this, it was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and remains a popular tourist attraction which is visited each year by millions of people from around the globe.
