Music plays a big role in our lives. It can cheer us up when we are sad and motivate us to do great things. Psychologists even say that our taste in music shows what kind of people we are. Is there a link between music genres and personality? Scientists believe that these things are connected.
Back in 2010, Dr. Adrian North did a study into the link between music preferences and personality. More than 36,000 people from all over the world answered questions about their favourite music genres and character.
The results of the study were interesting.
Fans of pop music are usually outgoing. They enjoy the company of other people. However, they are often less creative than people of the other categories and rarely produce new interesting ideas.
Many people think that rock and heavy metal are aggressive music genres. So it is interesting to learn that fans of these styles tend to be gentle and introverted. They also usually have low self-esteem and are not confident about their abilities.
Hip-hop and rap fans love going out and socialising. These people are often extroverted.
Country music lovers usually work hard. People in this category are not shy. They have no problem speaking in public.
The most surprising result in Dr. North's study is that classical music lovers and heavy metal fans have a lot in common. The popular opinion is that those who listen to heavy music are usually unhappy and depressed. But this is not true. Like classical music fans, these people tend to be easy-going. They don't worry much.
The study showed that there is definitely a link between music preferences and personality. Music is like a mirror: it shows what kind of people we are.
