Task 2
Nutrients are substances that all living organisms need to grow and survive. The three basic macronutrients, that we all need, are proteins, carbohydrates and fats. They are all equally essential, although they have different functions.

Protein

Proteins are the building blocks of our body. They help our cells and tissues grow and repair. Nowadays, people tend to think that protein is essential only for our muscles, that is why it is so popular among sportsmen. But we all need protein because it is a source of energy for our cells and tissues. Seafood, lean meat, poultry, beans, soy and nuts are good sources of protein.

Carbohydrates

These macronutrients are known as the main energy source. Nutritionists suggest carbohydrates should take up to 65% of your daily calorie intake. Carbohydrates are fuel for our central nervous system. But you have to be careful. Eating chocolate and white bread as sources of carbohydrates is a slippery slope. Try to limit consumption of processed food such as white flour and food with added sugar. Pay attention to complex carbohydrates because many of them contain useful fibre as well. Some examples of complex carbohydrates are vegetables, fruit and whole-grain pasta.

Fats

Although these macronutrients are often associated with unhealthy food, they are essential for our body as well. Fats help the vitamins to absorb, let our blood sugar be balanced and decrease the risk of heart diseases. But you need to know the difference between healthy and unhealthy fats. You should limit (but not necessarily exclude) saturated fats that you can find in butter, full-fat dairy products and meat fat. On the other hand, unsaturated fats can be beneficial for your health. They are mostly present in fish, nuts and avocados.
