The Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov was born in 1711 in the village Denisovka near Kholmogory, the town of Kholmogory, Arkhangelsk Gubernia. His father was a fisherman. When he was little, Mikhail read all books in his village. When he was 17, he left his home and went to Moscow. There he entered the Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy. It was the only higher educational institution in Moscow at that time. Lomonosov worked hard and studied well. He completed the seven-grade curriculum of the Academy in four years. A year later, he went to Petersburg. Then he went abroad to learn about mining and metals. After coming back to Russia, he became a professor of chemistry and a member of the Academy of Sciences. Lomonosov was a unique person. He was good at physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology, and history. He discovered the Law of Conservation of Energy. He called chemistry his main job, but he was also the first Russian physicist. He worked hard to make Russian science better. He helped to open the Moscow University in 1755. The university was a big centre of learning and science. Lomonosov was very famous in the 18th century. He died at 54 years old in 1765.
