[Natural disasters and dealing with the consequences|Natural disasters and human activity|Natural disasters, their types, causes and consequences]

What's a natural disaster? It's a sudden and violent event in nature that kills a lot of people or causes a lot of damage.

They include earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, mudflows, rockslides, floods, droughts, cyclones, hurricanes, tornadoes, snowdrifts and avalanches, continuous heavy rains, severe frosts, and extensive fires. Natural disasters also include epidemics, diseases which affect flora and fauna, and the massive spread of forest and agricultural insects or animals which damage the food or crops.

Natural disasters can occur apart from one another or one disaster can cause the other one. Some catastrophes (like fires or explosions) can appear as a result of human activity, but more often natural factors serve as the main cause of natural disasters.

The consequences of such catastrophes are very negative. According to statistics, floods cause the greatest damage (40% of the total damage), hurricanes (20%), earthquakes and droughts (15% each), 10% of the total damage is caused by other types of natural disasters. The results of natural disasters may include:

  • ecological problems (air, water and soil pollution, extinction of animal species, forest destruction)
  • health problems (intoxication, diseases, injuries, mental disorders, and numerous deaths)
  • economical problems (destruction and damage of buildings, constructions and even the whole cities, death of livestock, loss of agricultural land and raw materials etc.)
