What did Irina's parents do in her childhood?
I'm Irina. I'm 19. I'm from Moscow. I live with my parents and grandmother in a small flat. Although my parents worked very hard when I was a child, and they didn’t spoil me. They played games with me in the evenings, and helped me with my schoolwork when I needed it. I share a room with my grandmother. Family ties are very important in my country, and my father is really pleased I make the time to listen to my grandmother — his mother. My granny is very chatty, and she talks to me a lot about her own parents and what life was like when she was growing up. I’m more tolerant now than I was a few years ago, and I realise how much pleasure it gives her to tell these stories, even though she has a tendency to repeat the same ones over and over again! I’m more interested in them now, in fact, because some of the things she remembers relate to significant events in our national history. I’m much closer to my mother these days than I was when I was aged fourteen or fifteen, and she seems to regard me as more of an equal rather than just a moody teenager, which is nice. We don’t always see eye to eye, of course, but I’m better at keeping my temper when things don’t go my way. That makes for greater family harmony.
