A trip to Tofalariya

I want to tell you about my trip to Tofalariya. It is a small region in Irkutsk Oblast, located in the mountains far from big roads, in taiga.

You can't take a train to Tofalariya, there are no train stations nearby. You need to go by train to the town of Nizhneudinsk and take a helicopter to one of the Tofalariya villages from there. The helicopters do not fly every day. Sometimes you need to wait for more than a week.

There is a special helicopter airport in Nizhneudinsk. From there, I travelled to the Nerha village in Tofalariya. This village also has a place called ‘airport’, but is doesn’t look like a big city airport. It is a wooden building with an ‘Airport’ sign on it, and there is a field nearby. In summer, there are usually some goats grazing in this field. When people know a helicopter is coming soon, they take the goats away from the field, so the helicopter can land safely.

There is a river near the village of Nerha. It is a very small river that you can usually find in the mountains. You can't travel by boat along this river, and of course you can’t travel there by any ship. But during winter this river gets covered with ice. People can drive a car along this river because there are no big waterfalls or other things that can stop a car. When there is no ice, people have to use helicopters, and that is really expensive.

I visited Nerha in summer, so I couldn’t go by car. When I came there, I saw a beautiful quiet place with mountain forest all around. The local people are mostly hunters, but they also keep some horses, cows and goats. When it was  time for me to leave, I had to wait a few days because it was cloudy and rainy. Helicopters do not fly in cloudy and rainy weather, it is really dangerous. Later, when the weather got better, a helicopter arrived and I could go back home.
