The theatre of ancient Greece is the oldest one in Europe. It is also famous for its dramas. The ancient Greek drama grew in popularity from 700 BC and reached its peak in the fifth century BC.

The legacy left to us by the ancient times in the field of art is huge. Ancient architecture, sculpture, literature and theatre were the subject of study and imitation in the following centuries. Before the drama appeared in Greece there was a long period of the epic and the lyric. And even before epics and lyrics there was folklore — old sayings, labour and ritual songs, hymns to the gods, myths and other types of oral folk art.

It is widely concidered that mythology had a special place in Greek folklore. This form of folk art appeared at an early stage of human society's development and played a huge role in the evolution of all types of ancient art. The subjects and characters of Greek myths appeared in all sorts and types of the ancient literature, including drama.

The first literary comedies and tragedies were created during the Renaissance. The plays by the ancient authors were used as the models for those performances. For example, some significant Western European playwrights repeatedly turned to the rich theatrical plots of ancient legends and stories. There were Shakespeare, Schiller, Goethe and others among them. Later many playwrights of the twentieth century also used antique plots and images.
