Elizabeth of Russia
Elizabeth Petrovna was the Empress of Russia from 1741 until her death in 1762. Elizabeth was born in Kolomenskoye, near Moscow, on 18 December 1709. She was the daughter of Peter the Great, Tsar of Russia, and his second wife, Catherine I. Of the twelve children of Peter and Catherine \(five sons and seven daughters\) only two daughters, Anna \(b\. 1708\) and Elizabeth \(b\. 1709\), lived long enough to become adults.
Elizabeth was the favourite child of her father. She was a bright girl, but her education was not good. Peter I did not think that his daughter could become Empress because he had an elder son. Elizabeth had a French governess and could speak Italian, German and French. She was also an excellent dancer and rider. Elizabeth was physically active and loved riding, hunting, sledging, skating, and gardening.
In 1720s Elizabeth’s parents died. Her fiance and Peter II died too. Her cousin Anna became the Empress of Russia. Anna did not like Elizabeth and they were not friends. She did not want Elizabeth to play any political role. But after Anna died, Elizabeth asked the Army for help and became the new Empress.
Elizabeth did many important things. With Mikhail Lomonosov she founded the University of Moscow. With Ivan Shuvalov she founded the Academy of Arts in St Petersburg. She was not cruel, and she never allowed to execute \(kill\) any criminals.
