Probably you have seen photographs of the Grand Canyon, the great valley in the desert country of Arizona. But you must go there to see the beauty of the place with your own eyes. The Colorado River formed the Grand Canyon during millions of years. One side of the canyon is higher than the other, so there are different kinds of plants and animals on opposite sides of the canyon. The south side is dry desert country. The north side has tall forests.
The canyon looks different at different times of day, and in different seasons and weather. In the morning and in the evening the red, gold, brown and orange colours are very clear and bright. In winter there is snow lying in some parts of the canyon.
Every part of the canyon looks different. The north side is quiet. It takes all day to drive there from the south side because there is only one bridge over the Colorado River. The south side is a busier place. Most visitors stay here in camps and hotels.
You can walk down into the Grand Canyon. People have to carry a lot of water because it is very hot down there. Some tourists take a boat trip down the Colorado River and enjoy the beauty of the place from the water.
