The Ancient Greeks created the theatre around the year 500 BC. They divided plays into two kinds: tragedy and comedy. The Ancient Greeks performed the plays outdoors in large amphitheatres so that many people could see them. There were contests among playwrights (people who write plays), and the winner got a prize. Actors wore masks. It helped the visitors not to think about the actor, but about the character.

In the Middle Ages, the Catholic Church began to use theatre as a way of telling stories from the Bible to people who did not know how to read.

At the end of the 16th century, travelling actors began to perform in theatre buildings. This was the period when William Shakespeare lived and worked. At that time, women in England were not allowed to perform, so male actors played female characters.

After World War II, playwrights in Europe and the United States began doing plays in a new style called "The theatre of the absurd". The plays written in this style make people think about questions like "What is it like to be a person in the world?" and "What does it mean for a person to be free?".

And what is the theatre of the 21st century? In modern theatres, the audience watches the actors speak and address each other. Previously, the actors mainly addressed the audience. Also, social media and basically the Internet are affecting the theatre. Nowadays, you can watch plays in the cinema, enjoy the marvellous 3D effects on the stage or even take part in the play.
