Hunter Doherty (Patch) Adams is a professional doctor, a social innovator and a clown. He is one of the founders of laughter therapy and hospital clowning. His innovative projects and performances are known throughout the world.

In the early 1970s, Adams founded the Gesundheit Institute in the Pocahontas County, West Virginia. It was absolutely free for everyone who needed medical treatment. The Institute combined traditional medical hospital practice and alternative medicine: acupuncture, homoeopathy and others. Arts, crafts, nature observation, farming and recreational activities were also included in the treatment process. The hospital had worked for 12 years and had to close its doors because of financial and bureaucratic troubles.

Nowadays, Adams is widely known for his activities as a hospital clown. Every year he gathers a group of volunteers and travels with them around the world. With an international team of hospital clowns, Adams makes about nine visits to different countries a year. They dress like clowns and stage performances in hospitals and boarding schools. These performances help children overcome the difficulties of aggressive therapy with the help of laughter.

The life and work of Adams became the basis for the biographical film called Patch Adams. The role of Adams was played by Robin Williams. At first, the film was sharply criticised, but now it is quite popular and has a lot of fans.
