Mrs Wilson: Hi, Kate. How are you today?
Kate: I'm fine, Mrs Wilson. Thank you. And you?
Mrs Wilson: I'm OK too. Thank you. Let's start our lesson with checking your homework. Have you done it?
Kate: Yes, I have. I've found and studied the information about Antarctica.
Mrs Wilson: Great. Let's check. My first question is about its location and territory.
Kate: Well, Antarctica is located at the South Pole. It is about 48 times the size of the UK and twice as big as Australia. About 98 % of Antarctica is covered with ice. It has over 90 % of the world's ice and 70 % of its fresh water. It is also the coldest, windiest, highest and driest place in the world.
Mrs Wilson: OK. Let's move on. What can you tell me about the plants and animals of the continent?
Kate: Well… There are no trees or bushes, only moss and algae grow there. There are whales, seals and birds in the waters and on the coast of the continent. Penguins are the most famous animals of Antarctica. They can't fly and they live on the ice sheets and on the coast.
Mrs Wilson: Well done, Kate. My last question is about the actions which are taken to protect the nature of Antarctica.
Kate: There is a special agreement that protects all the animals and plants there and prohibits pollution of the oceans. Nobody can hunt Antarctic animals. And only those who have a special permit can visit the area.
Mrs Wilson: Thank you, Kate. You've found really interesting information. Good job.
