Hundreds of thousands of years ago thick woods grew everywhere on our planet. Men lived in caves and dressed in the skins of wild animals. It was then that the dog became man's friend. At first, the dog went with men on their expeditions to the woods and got some food from them.

With time, the dog began to look at men as its masters. Soon the men trained the dogs to help them in the hunt. This happened long before the time when people learned to write and so we know about it only because we find the bones of primitive dogs with the bones of men in the caves.

There are different theories about the history of the dog. One of them says that our modern dogs and wolves have the same forefathers. In Egypt people find pictures of dogs that are more than 5,000 years old. Egyptian people thought that the dog was a very importantanimal and when a dog died in an Egyptian home, it was a tragedy for all the family.

Most people in the world love dogs but not all of them. For example, the Hindus who live in India think that the dog is an unclean animal.
