- A. “The Night Witches” was the nickname of the 588th Night Bomber Regiment of the Soviet Air Forces. They had no machine guns, no parachutes, no radar, and no radios. Instead, all they had were stopwatches, maps, flashlights, compasses, pencils, and rulers. This didn’t stop them though, and they successfully dropped more than 23,000 tons of munitions and completed 30,000 bombing raids against the German army during World War II over a four-year span. This all-female squadron came directly from women in the Soviet Union requesting to have a larger and more active part in the war.
- B. When World War II began, a female pilot, Colonel Marina Raskova, began receiving letters from thousands of women who wanted a more active role in the war effort. Colonel Raskova took all of these “please” very seriously, and she used them to craft a petition to Joseph Stalin. The petition asked to be allowed to form an all-female pilot regiment to fight against the German army.
- C. Joseph Stalin granted Colonel Raskova her petition, and he ordered for the formation of three all-female pilot regiments. With this petition, the Soviet Union became the first country to allow women to take an active role and fly combat missions. Out of the three regiments, the only one that was exclusively female was the 588th Night Bombers. Every individual from the mechanics to the commander to the pilots were female.
- D. In 1942, the first regiment assembly took place in a small town by Stalingrad called Engels. Around 400 women with age ranges of 17 to 26 enlisted for these regiments. Colonel Raskova greeted the future combat pilots here.
- E. The Night Witches used their plane’s slower speeds to their advantage when they flew. The slower speeds actually gave them a much greater maneuverability than traditional planes.
The German army also started to spread rumors about the 588th Regiment because they were so awe-struck by their skills. They accused the Soviet government of giving the women some sort of feline-esque night vision through experimentation. Any German soldier who was able to successfully shoot down a Night Witch automatically got the Iron Cross medal as a reward.
