In 1836 Victoria fell in love with Prince Albert when she saw him at once. Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was her maternal relative. Both Albert and Victoria shared a warm and affectionate relationship that were growing stronger over time. In 1839 Victoria proposed to Albert.

They got married in the Royal Chapel of St. James's Palace, London, on February 10, 1840. Victoria asked that none of her guests wear white clothes on that day. The Queen's wedding dress was the only white with beautiful lace embroidery because she wanted to draw attention to herself. Queen's dress was completed with an 18-foot train, with white satin shoes, with Turkish diamond earrings and with a sapphire brooch that belonged to Prince Albert. Over her veil, the Queen wore a wreath of myrtle and orange blossoms.

The Royal Couple was blessed with the first child, a daughter who was christened Victoria on November 21, 1840. Though Victoria despised pregnancy, but she had eight more children, Albert Edward (Prince of Wales), Alice, Alfred, Helena, Arthur, Leopold and Beatrice. In fact, both Victoria and Albert were a product of their unhappy childhood. However, when their first child was born, the Queen was busy with her duties as a monarch and she had very little time to bring up her child. In 17 years she had nine children. Albert made a strict educational programme for his children right from infancy. Albert tried to instill discipline in their children. However, from an early age, Prince Edward refused to follow his father’s plan for the royal children’s education. Later Prince Edward became King Edward VII who was successful and had the special charm and diplomatic skills that helped in the continuing popularity of the British Royal family. All of their children were well-brought-up persons.

You can thank Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert for your Christmas tree. Since 1848 the custom had been popularised when Albert sent decorated Christmas trees to schools and to army barracks around Windsor. That year a picture of the royal family decorating a Christmas tree was also published, inspiring other British families to do the same.
