I’m Mark Williams. I have a flat in central Manchester. But about ten years ago I lived in a small town in the countryside. There weren’t so many multistoreyed houses or cars. I also remember that there weren’t any motorways. Why? Because the town was very small and we didn’t need them! I can remember its old shops, the grocer’s and the baker’s where we went to buy fresh bread every morning. It was my duty and I enjoyed it though it was very early in the morning. It also had a small library. We didn’t have many books at home so I spent hours there reading or just looking through those amazing old books. There was a small cafe on central square with a little garden around it. My friends and I often had tea and cakes and sometimes sandwiches there after school. I knew the owner, Mrs. Andrews, who was a fantastic cook! And at weekends the square became a vibrant and colourful place as it was market time. Shopping at a street market was a special experience. It was a big event for the whole town and a time to meet friends, talk and mix with different people. There was a great choice of entertainment, too. We had a cinema, two theatres, a football pitch and a small music hall. I always had something interesting to do or somewhere to go to. I often go there, it’s like travelling back to your childhood.
