The International Space Station, also known as the ISS, is a very large satellite where people can live for several months. It is an international project among 14 countries. They are Russia, the United States, Canada, Japan, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, France, Switzerland and Sweden. Other states such as Brazil and China also work in cooperation with the ISS.
The ISS was launched in 1998 when Russian and American space modules were joined together. Many countries participated in the production of the ISS components. It is one of the most expensive things ever constructed.
The astronauts who live and work on the ISS are called the crew. These days up to seven crew members can live on the ISS at the same time. They spend most of their time working on scientific projects. The ISS is a laboratory in space. The astronauts carry out a lot of scientific experiments.
There is no gravity in orbit. This is called zero gravity. The astronauts just float in the air. In zero gravity, the astronauts do not use their muscles very much. Without gravity, one can get a big upper body and thin legs. So astronauts exercise a lot to keep their muscles strong and stay healthy.
Eating and drinking is not an easy task in space. The astronauts eat and drink from tubes as otherwise the liquids and food would float around and might ruin the equipment. Taking a shower is quite hard in space, so the astronauts usually wash with a wet sponge or cloth. A toilet is a problem too as flushing a toilet needs gravity. On the ISS, the toilet is attached to an astronaut as there is no gravity for flushing.
The ISS is very big.
