Krakatoa – The Mighty Volcano
Krakatoa is a volcanic island located between Java island and Sumatra island of Indonesia. In 1883, Krakatoa woke up after being dormant for about 200 years and exploded with a strength of 13,000 times the power of an atomic bomb. The huge explosion was so powerful, that it was heard as far as central Australia.
It sent out poisonous gases, pumice, rocks, smoke and hot ash 20 miles up into the air, which spread for thousands of miles and reached the islands on the east coast of Africa. Hundreds of people in a town on Sumatra island died almost immediately, as the hot red ash cloud burned them and their homes. The thick cloud of smoke and ash from the violent eruption, even caused sunlight to be blocked out for several days and temperatures around the world fell significantly for two years. Krakatoa volcanic activity also caused 120 foot tsunami waves which swept people away. About 36,000 people were killed in the disaster, while Krakatoa sank to the bottom of the ocean. However, in 1927, a new island started rising up. It is called Anak Krakatoa \(Krakatoa's son\). Today Anak Krakatoa still sprays lava into the air.
