Russia: Norilsk Environmental Disaster
Founded as a forced labour camp in 1935, the Arctic city of Norilsk is now the world's largest heavy metals smelting complex and the company responsible — Norilsk Nickel — is Russia's biggest air polluter.
Copper, nickel, lead and other heavy metals poison the soil and water supply while sulfur dioxide emissions contribute to chronic diseases of the lungs, respiratory and digestive systems, and can result in lung cancer.
On May 29 in 2020, over 20,000 tons of diesel fuel leaked from a power plant storage site owned by the company. Investigators believe the storage tank sank because of melting permafrost, which weakened its supports. The Arctic has had weeks of unusually warm weather, probably a symptom of global warming.
The diesel fuel seeped into the soil and nearby rivers, polluting the region's delicate ecosystem. For several days, Nornickel and local authorities attempted to cover up the incident. However, it was almost impossible to hide such a big catastrophe because fuel floated on the surface of the water near Norilsk. It was quickly visible via satellite images, prompting nearby rivers to change colour.
During a video conference call on June 3, Russian President Vladimir Putin finally declared the situation a national emergency, and the Ministry of Emergency Situations sent personnel to the city to help out. In a later conference call with Putin, Nornickel owner Vladimir Potanin promised his company would foot the bill for the cleanup.
Russian media have since regularly reported that major progress is being made in the cleanup operation. Environmentalists have, however, stressed that accidents of this kind often take years to undo.
