Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus was born in 1451, in Genoa, Italy. He was an Italian explorer, navigator and colonizer. Christopher was the eldest of the five children in the family. He liked travelling and he started his trips by ship when he was 19. He was not a scholar but was a self-educated man, who was particularly interested in astronomy, science and navigation. He also became fluent in Latin, Portuguese and Spanish. He visited Portugal and saw many merchants from different countries such as Japan, China, the East Indies and others. Christopher decided to find a short way to those countries. He asked King John of Portugal for three ships and sailors, food and equipment, a title of admiral. But the King refused. Next time he asked King Ferdinand and Queen Isabel of Spain to give him all the necessary things for the trip. After some time he received the support of the Spanish Crown. He got everything he needed.
Christopher sailed from Spain in 1492. He reached one of the islands and named it San Salvador. On this first voyage, Columbus also explored the northeast coast of Cuba. Between 1492 and 1504 he made a total of four voyages to the Caribbean and South America. Unfortunately, he never learned that it was not Asia, but another continent. Christopher sailed back to Spain and settled in Seville in 1504. Christopher Columbus died in 1506. Numerous cities and places are named after Columbus in the USA and Canada.
