Iztaccíhuatl is the third highest mountain inMexico, about 40 miles south of Mexico City. It may look like just a mountain, but if you look closer, you might notice the shape of a woman.Aztec legend tells us that the mountain peaks formedover the body of a girl who died from a broken heart.
According to legend, an emperor promised awarrior, Popocatépetl, that he could marry his daughterif he went to battle and came back alive. Theemperor's daughter, Iztaccíhuatl, loved Popocatépetlvery much and waited for him to come home. One day, she received a letter from Popocatépetl's enemy saying that Popocatépetl was dead.This upset Iztaccíhuatl very much and she died; somesay she died from sadness.
When Popocatépetl finally came back from war,he found Iztaccíhuatl dead. He carried her to amountaintop and built a fire. Popocatépetl stayed there until he died too. Over time, earthand snow covered their bodies and while Iztaccíhuatlbecame the mountain, Popocatépetl became thevolcano.
Some people say that the mountain is in theshape of Iztaccíhuatl's body. Because of this, people call the mountain 'The Sleeping Woman'. The legend alsosays that the smoke that comes from the nearbyvolcano is actually from Popocatépetl's fire that stillburns.
