Many ancient societies employed herbs for medicinal treatment and to relieve [tolerant|severe|harsh|difficult] pain and recorded their uses. In his seminal text, "De Materia Medica" ("On Medicinal Substances"), he summarised his knowledge of plants gained through years of observing their medicinal uses. Dioscorides' most important insight was to organise the work according to the physiological effect of each drug on the body. He recorded 944 drugs, of which more than 650 were of plant origin, and described their physical properties, as well as how they should be prepared, their medicinal effects, how long one could help recover [of|from|for|against ] disease, and what diseases they were effective against.
