Findhorn Ecovillage
It all started over forty years ago with a few people living in a caravan in a remote part of Scotland growing giant organic cabbages. From these small beginnings, the pioneering ecovillage of Findhorn has become one of the world's most successful [test|inventions|discoveries|experiments] in sustainable living.
[Much|Some|Both|More] of the houses in the village have a rather strange appearance. One home, for instance, was made out of a giant recycled whisky washback. Other innovative styles include a straw bale house and homes with turf roofs. Nevertheless, all the houses are built according to the [strict|harsh|severe|tight] guidelines of the project's building code to make sure that they are efficiently insulated to keep the need for heating [to|in|on|with] a minimum.
The village generates its own electricity from four wind turbines and the site also has its own organic wastewater treatment system. This is so [precise|efficient|competent|capable] that the treated water is pure enough to be used to water the villagers' crops. Organic food is [raised|planted|made|created] in the village on numerous small plots and provides most of the community's fresh food requirements.
Findhorn has [laid|set|fixed|settled] an example of how to achieve a sustainable way of life that has a minimal impact on the environment and shows that, after all, it's really not that difficult to do.
