There are so many unique animals in Australia!
Everybody knows the kangaroo. Kangaroos can jump more than four metres and travel at seventy kilometres per hour. They eat grass and leaves and live in small groups.
The koala is a beautiful animal with grey hair and a black nose. Koalas are marsupials. This means that they are mammals that carry their young in a pouch. They look like cute bears, but koalas are definitely not bears! They eat eucalyptus leaves and drink little or no water at all. The word “koala” means “no water” in the native Australian language.
The echidna and the platypus are really very unusual. They are the only mammals that lay eggs. The echidna eats ants. The platypus swims well.
There are more than eight hundred kinds of birds in Australia. The continent is the home of budgies and some kinds of parrots. The Australian emu is a flightless bird that can travel great distances at fifty kilometres per hour. It is one of the largest birds in the world. The laughing kookaburra is well known as the “merry, merry king of the bush” from the children’s song.
Australia is full of surprises and many people dream to visit this continent.
