All of us like eating ice cream. It is cold, sweet, tasty and it makes us feel happy. But did you know that it has a long, long history? The first "ice cream" appeared 3000 years ago in China. The ancient Chinese ate snow mixed with rice and fruit. Roman emperors sent their slaves to mountain tops to bring back fresh snow. It was then mixed with fruit and honey. In 1295, Marco Polo, the famous Italian explore, returned home after 17 years in China and taught his friends how to make ice cream. In 1672, the first ice cream cafe was opened in Paris. They sold ice cream in metal glasses with small pieces of ice, fruit and nuts. The ice cream cone was invented in 1904 and its shape hasn't changed much for more than a hundred years. Today, you can buy all sorts of ice cream. In Japan, you can buy octopus and shrimp ice cream! According to scientists, ice cream really makes people feel better, it's good for health. It gives us vitamins A and D, calcium and minerals.
