The Paralympic Games area multi-sport event forathletes with physical, mental andsensory disabilities. Games includewheelchair tennis, basketball and rugby,as well as judo for athletes who cannot seewell.
The origin of the Paralympic Games is morerecent than that of the Olympic Games. It all began inEngland in 1948, when a man named Sir Ludwig Guttmanncame up with the idea of organising a sportscompetition for World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries.Years later, in 1960, Rome hosted the first Paralympic-stylegames for disabled athletes from around the world. Today, theParalympics are held after the Olympic Games in the samehost city. The purpose of the games is toempower and inspire athletes with disabilities.
One of the most popular events at the Paralympic Games isgoalball. The rules of the game are as follows: players who areunable to see properly compete in teams of threeand try to throw a ball that has bells in it into theopposing team's goal. Since they are blindfoldedthey can only understand the position of the ball from the soundthe bells make.
Paralympic competitors are determined and exceptionalathletes. They push themselves to the limit and never give up.They are highly respected for their talent and determination.They aim to inspire other people to overcometheir disabilities and realise they have what it takes to go forgold!
