Selkies are magical creatures that can turn themselves from a seal to a human form and turn back again. The legend about one of the selkie is connected with the Orkney and Shetland Islands.
This is a tale about about a man who found a beautiful selkie on a beach and decided to steal her skin and made her become his wife and give birth to his children. The selkie female cried and missed the ocean very much. A few years later, the selkie found her skin and decided to escape from her husband. And she did it! She left her children and never returned to that place. Some versions of this sad legend say that the selkie visited her children on land once a year, others say that her children saw a large seal near them and said hello.
A Shetland version of this tale about the selkie woman who became a human wife appeared in publishing in 1822. In this edition, at the beginning of this legend, the selkie had a husband of her own kind in the ocean before she had to stay and live on land.
