Read the text about modern manners in Great Britain and choose the correct endings for the sentences.

Everyone who has studied English knows how much the British people love their manners. It is a part of their national identity, along with fish and chips or talking about the weather. There is a joke that a real British can say sorry about seven times while getting on a bus. And of course, you can hear “hello” or “how are you” very often.

But why are the British like that? What helps them to be polite? In former days, manners (a certain way people eat and talk to each other) showed that a person belonged to the upper class. Great Britain was a conservative country where your social status was extremely important. But this kind of behaviour isn't natural. People just can’t always feel like thanking someone or saying please.

Nowadays, the British choose between two ways: some of them are still very polite, but the others don’t hide their feelings. They’re tired of pretending to be polite and sometimes can even seem rude. Don’t be surprised if you meet modern British people who prefer to say what they really think.
