Liverpool Chinatown

Liverpool saw the first Chinese sailors arrive in the 1850s, when the Alfred Holt & Co. established a shipping line from Shanghai to Liverpool and hired Chinese sailors. Therefore, Chinatown in Liverpool is Europe's oldest Chinese community.

During two World Wars, many Chinese residents of Liverpool Chinatown worked on military ships. After the wars, many things changed in Liverpool Chinatown. There were efforts to reduce the population of Chinese origins. Those who had served during the war and those who had families had to leave the UK. Many families were separated as a result and children were brought up without knowing or seeing their fathers.

The Chinatown was badly bombed during World War II, and post-war planning saw Liverpool Chinatown relocate to its current location around Nelson Street, Great George Street, Upper Parliament Street, Duke Street and Berry Street.

At the end of the 20th century, the UK had moved sharply away from its past of gunboat diplomacy. The last Chinese colony, Hong Kong, was returned to China in 1997, and British society has become multicultural, celebrating its diverse heritage. Racism isn't unheard of, of course, but it became rarer. Liverpool Chinatown welcomed the new millennium with a Chinatown archway. While it was not the first archway in the UK, it is the tallest archway in Europe and the second tallest after the archway at Washington Chinatown.

There are also plans to make Liverpool Chinatown an important part of Liverpool's tourism landscape. The Chinese New Year celebration is an important local event, with Chinese and many locals taking part in the parade.

Liverpool Chinatown is one of the most important Chinatowns in Europe, with a history dating back to the recent waves of Chinese immigration and the development of their relationship with the host society.
