Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov was a Soviet physicist, activist for peace and human rights. He was born in \(1921\). \(5\) years after graduating from Moscow State University he received his PhD. He conducted research in nuclear power and took part in creating the first Soviet thermonuclear bomb. It was tested on August \(12\), \(1953\). That same year, Sakharov received his D.Sc. degree and was elected a full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

Later Andrei Sakharov became a political activist. He was concerned about moral aspects of the work on nuclear weapons, its consequences and he was against nuclear proliferation. He played a role in the \(1963\) Partial Test Ban Treaty, signed in Moscow. In \(1965\), he returned to physics and began working on cosmology, but continued to fight discrimination.

In \(1968\), Sakharov wrote an essay calling for nuclear disarmament. In \(1970\), he founded the Committee for Human Rights.

Andrei Sakharov was an renowned physicist and truly the conscience of humanity, as he was called. He was awarded Nobel Prize in \(1975\): "In a convincing manner Sakharov has emphasized that Man's inviolable rights provide the only safe foundation for genuine and enduring international cooperation."

Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov, an outstanding humanist and a scientist, died in \(1989\).
