When you think of the African savannah, you might probably recall an animal that has become a real symbol of these grassy plains. It's the African buffalo.

These animals have short stocky legs. Unlike deer or antelope, they don't have branchy horns. African buffalo belong to a breed of buffalo with a single pair of horns, but they have learnt to use them very effectively. Their horns are curved and sharp, and they can use them to defend themselves against predators.

Legend has it that one day, an African god decided to create an animal. He took some clay and shaped it. But when he finished, he threw it away as he realised that it was too ugly. The animal fell to the earth and landed in a swamp. The mud from the swamp covered its skin, making it look black and shiny. The animal also grew long horns and sharp hooves. That's how a buffalo appeared.

What other adaptations do African buffalo use to survive in the savannah? First, their thick skin helps them to protect their bodies from the sun and predators. Their large ears help them to cool down by flapping them. With their big lips, buffalo can eat tough grasses and leaves. Their large feet provide their ability to keep balance both on rocky areas and on soft ground.

African buffalo became domesticated about three thousand years ago. They serve as so-called draft animals. Their job is to pull ploughs and carts. They are also used for their meat and milk.
